The dragonfly design has a strong connection with Japanese history, check here for more details:

Dragonfly and Japanese culture:
"The Nihon Shoki" (The chronicles of Japan written in 720) mentions the dragonfly, then called Akitsu. The chronicles also report that the first emperor, Jimmu Tenno, had climbed a small mountain in Yamato (now Nara Prefecture) and as he looked at the land he ruled, he declared: "My country has the form of two akitsu mating ".

The chronicles also describe an “extraordinary incident” that occurred to the Emperor Yuryaku Tenno, while hunting on an open plain in Yoshino (southern Nara Prefecture today). A horsefly landed on the royal arms and it was ready to sting the emperor. A dragonfly flying nearby rushed on the horsefly and made it flee. So, the grateful emperor decreed that the region would now be called "Akitsu-no", the "Plain of The Dragonfly". The chronicles say that these events gave Japan its old name, Akitsu Shima (The Dragonfly Isles).
