The hitotsume-kozō (一つ目小僧) is a small, bald boy dressed as a young monk, with a single large eye in the middle of his face. He is one of the gentlest yokai: he appears suddenly on country roads to startle travelers, then runs off. In old Kantō villages, families hung bamboo baskets outside their doors on certain days, hoping the many "eyes" of the weave would scare him away.

This design shows him in an Edo-period woodblock print style (ukiyo-e): a straw hat on his back, a gourd and a walking staff, a full moon and his name in kanji on a traditional cartouche.
