In Japanese folklore, the kyubi no kitsune (九尾の狐) is the most powerful of all fox spirits. Legend says a fox grows a new tail every hundred years, and only when it reaches nine tails does it gain its full powers: shape-shifting, far sight and great wisdom. Some nine-tailed foxes serve as messengers of the god Inari, while others, like the famous Tamamo-no-Mae, became legendary tricksters.

This design reimagines the nine-tailed fox in the spirit of an Edo-period woodblock print (ukiyo-e), with its name written in kanji on a traditional cartouche, a red sun and a sky of drifting clouds.
