The tengu (天狗) is one of the most famous yokai of Japan: a winged spirit of the mountains, with a red face and a long nose, dressed like the yamabushi, the mountain ascetics, with their small black cap and white pompoms. Tengu were first feared as tricksters who led travelers astray and troubled Buddhist monks, then came to be seen as powerful guardians of the mountains and forests.

The best-known legend tells of Sōjōbō, the great tengu of Mount Kurama near Kyoto, who taught swordsmanship and strategy to the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune, later one of Japan's most celebrated warriors.

This design shows a great tengu with spread black wings, long white hair and beard, a yamabushi robe with white pompoms, a sword at his belt and a staff in hand, standing on a rock among maple branches under a red sun, drawn in the style of an Edo-period woodblock print (ukiyo-e) with his name in kanji on a traditional cartouche.
