The hōnengyo (豊年魚), whose name means "fish of the abundant year", is a strange river creature of Japanese folklore, with a long scaly body, short legs and a spiny crest along its back. It hides at the bottom of rivers and only shows itself by surprise.

Seeing one was a good omen, promising plenty of fish and a happy, prosperous year. The most famous sighting took place in 1866 on the banks of the Yodo River in Osaka.

This kids' design shows a friendly little hōnengyo popping out of the waves with a big smile, drawn in the style of an Edo-period woodblock print (ukiyo-e) with its name in kanji on a traditional cartouche.
