The shōjō (猩々) is a red-haired spirit of Japanese folklore, famous for its endless love of sake. Shōjō were said to live by the sea and to drink more than any human could without ever losing their cheerful mood. Their bright red hair gave its name to shōjōhi, a deep scarlet in traditional Japanese colors.

In the Noh play Shōjō, a devoted son who sells sake meets a mysterious customer who drinks cup after cup without getting drunk. The stranger turns out to be a shōjō, who rewards his kindness with a jar of sake that never runs dry.

This design shows a shōjō with long flowing red hair, wearing a black and white kimono with golden patterns, holding a red sake cup beside a large sake jar under a plum tree in bloom and a red sun, drawn in the style of an Edo-period woodblock print (ukiyo-e) with her name in kanji.
